Less than 2 weeks until the launch of Back on Track – Youths at Risk Project
/0 Comments/in Fight Factory News /by shawnThe Lincoln Kickboxing Academy (LKA) is excited to unveil a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering and guiding at-risk young people towards a brighter future. Developed in collaboration with The National Lottery Community Fund, our “Back on Track – Youths at Risk Project” is set to transform the lives of 60 young individuals each week, providing a unique blend of physical activity, mentorship, and academic support.
Project Overview:
Ran by experienced kickboxer and qualified coach Shawn Burton, along with two seasoned LKA sessional staff, the project aims to engage at-risk youth aged 11-18. Sessions will be held out of school hours from 4-6:30 pm, offering a structured program that includes coached kickboxing exercises, dedicated homework support, and socialising in a safe and supportive environment. The goal is to channel participants’ energy into positive activities, reducing the likelihood of engaging in anti-social behavior.
Inclusivity and Community Engagement:
The project is open to all, irrespective of gender, beliefs, or cultural background, aligning with our commitment to inclusivity. Participants will be divided into age-appropriate groups, fostering positive peer-to-peer connections. The activities are designed to improve emotional well-being, create positive social networks, enhance physical health, instill personal discipline, boost engagement with learning, and foster improved relationships with adults.
Our dedicated team, including a youth worker and local police representatives ensures a supportive and safe atmosphere. Open access is a key principle, allowing participants to attend freely and leave whenever they please, building trust with at-risk youth and breaking down engagement barriers.
Benefits of Participation:
The project’s core aims include improving emotional well-being, fostering positive peer relationships, enhancing physical health, and increasing personal discipline. By providing free after-school activities, we guide at-risk youth away from potential mistakes, offering positive outlets for their time. The structured kickboxing exercises and homework support contribute to improved life skills and practical knowledge.
Connecting with the Community:
Our project addresses the persistent issue of anti-social behavior in nearby target estates. With partnerships established with the local Youth Offending Service, Pupil Reintegration Team, and Lincolnshire Council, we aim to engage the most at-risk youth and provide them with positive alternatives.
Unique in its approach, LKA is walking distance from target estates, making it accessible to youth interested in kickboxing and fitness, including those from deprived backgrounds who can attend free sessions. We’ve successfully run similar projects in the past, such as “Gloves Up, Knives Down,” focusing on knife crime reduction through sport and mentorship.
Community Involvement and Sustainability:
This project has been designed based on the needs and interests of local youth. We actively involve the community by establishing a steering group, allowing young people to directly influence the project’s progress and suggest improvements. Opportunities for participation at all levels, including planning classes and providing feedback, ensure that the project remains tailored to the community’s evolving needs.
As an organisation deeply rooted in the community since 2010, LKA has built trust with local people, further supporting the successful delivery of this project. Funding from the Million Hours Fund has already played a crucial role in helping us develop and implement this initiative.
Supporting and Sustaining Change:
LKA, now a Company Limited by Guarantee, has a proven track record of community engagement and successful project delivery. With Shawn Burton at the helm, a renowned kickboxing professional, and an experienced team, we are well-equipped to manage this project effectively.
The National Lottery Community Fund’s support allows us to pilot this initiative, gather substantial feedback, and pave the way for further funding. We are committed to exploring various funding avenues, including local sponsorship options and community fundraising, to sustain and grow the project beyond the initial funding period.
Join Us in Unlocking Potential:
A big emphasis on our gratitude to the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport and The National Lottery Community Fund for making this groundbreaking project possible. Together, we can unlock the potential of our youth, guiding them towards a future filled with possibilities.
Join LKA in making a difference. Together, we unlock potential.
