Back on Track – Our Young People plan a workout

This week at our Back on Track – Activities for At Risk Youths project, proudly funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and supported by Lincoln Fight Factory, we saw something truly powerful unfold in our circuit training sessions.

Last week, our coaching staff worked closely with each group, giving a full introduction to the gym environment. Young people learned about the equipment, the muscle groups each exercise targets, and most importantly how to perform movements safely and with correct form. After building this foundation, each group was guided through a simple circuit designed to boost confidence and understanding.

This week, we handed over the reins.

Each group voted for a lead participant, who then took on the responsibility of designing and delivering their own circuit session using the equipment available. From planning exercises to motivating their peers, these young leaders stepped up and put their groups through their paces with energy and creativity.

The benefits of this approach have been clear. Allowing young people to take the lead builds confidence, communication skills, and a sense of ownership. It encourages teamwork, decision-making, and leadership—all while reinforcing their understanding of fitness and safe practice. Most importantly, it creates a supportive environment where their voices are heard and valued.

Here’s how the week looked:

  • Monday: 11–13 year olds
  • Wednesday: 14–16 year olds
  • Friday: 17–18 year olds

Across all age groups, we saw fantastic engagement, determination and growth. Watching these young people lead, support each other, and take pride in their sessions has been inspiring.

This is what Back on Track is all about—empowering young people to build confidence, resilience and positive futures.
