Phil Robbins announces retirement after Takeover Promotions stoppage victory
He has become one of the Lincoln Fight Factory’s stand out fighters, with an attitude of a proper old school fighter – fight anyone, anywhere, any rules at any notice – but now Phil Robbins has decided the time has come to hang up his gloves and step away from the fighting side of the sport. The Sleaford man is the current ISKA Midland and WRSA English champion and on Saturday retired undefeated as a Professional K1 rules fighter after a first round KO over Norway’s Mads Valencia with a knee to the head, lead leg head kick finish.
Phil has long been talking about retiring from fighting as family commitments and his very successful business is stopping him from training to the level he wants to in order to compete to the standards that he expects of himself.
The Robbin’s family gain is certainly the Lincoln Fight Factory’s loss, as Phil has been on fire under K1 rules since winning and defending his ISKA title and causing a huge upset to take the English title, but more than that he has become one of our greatest servants at the club with his helpful approach to everybody that steps foot in the gym.
Phil’s coach, Shawn Burton, is in no doubt of Phil’s achievements and the legacy he has left at the Lincoln Fight Factory, with the flame- haired switch hitters exciting all action style bringing many a great memory to everyone that has seen him fight. “Phil is certainly in the top 10 fighters that I have ever looked after and despite his relatively short K1 career, has achieved more than anybody, including himself, ever thought was possible. He mixed natural ability, commitment to the club and a drive to be the very best he could be and to great effect. I just wish we had him at the gym 5 years earlier as I have no doubt we could have made him World Champion” added Burton.
Most fighters retire after a string of bad loses and just slowly remove themselves from the gym, but Phil was in the form of his life and the KO victory under Professional K1 rules seem’s like the perfect time to call it a day on his fighting career.
But fear not, Phil will play an active part in the gym as a coach and as a sponsor to the club and will now be working as a business partner to Shawn as a promoter under the Takeover Promotions brand.
We would all like to wish Phil a happy retirement and thank him for the memories that he has brought to the gym, a legacy that will never be forgotten
